Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal passages caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mould, or skin flakes from certain animals. Hay fever is a type of allergic rhinitis caused by pollen or spores. Hay fever affects the nose, sinuses, throat, and eyes and usually occurs during the spring and summer months. Exactly when it occurs depends on which pollens the person is allergic to.
